Study Abroad: One of The Greatest Opportunities of a Lifetime
If you are lucky enough to have the option to study abroad, I highly recommend doing it. My experience living abroad not only allowed me to live in a new and awesome country, but it genuinely molded myself into a better, stronger person (as cheesy as that sounds). Here are 5 reasons why I am so happy that I studied abroad, and why you should study in a foreign country.
Studying abroad basically forces you to become independent. Even if you’re always with the new friends that you’ll make, you will have to learn to adapt to an entirely new culture and life style… And that’s all on your own. With your family and friends thousands of miles away, you need to be able to rely on yourself, and not others. Gaining independence not only prepares you for the post-college “real world”, but it give you a hell of a lot of confidence knowing that you can rely on yourself for anything.
2.Learning a Language
If you have any desire to learn a different language, then study abroad is a great opportunity to enhance your language skills. By living in a country that speaks a foreign tongue, you will inevitably be surrounded by it, so it definitely allows you to practice and improve your language speaking abilities.
Studying abroad gives you access to explore places that are much more expensive and difficult to travel to if you are going from the states. I studied abroad in Europe, and I have seen flights as cheep as 8 euro. If you want to see multiple cities and countries, going abroad will give you access to visit dozens of different places.
4.Meeting New People
Some of my best study abroad memories involve the people that I’ve met along the way. I lived in a residence hall, where I met Spaniards and International students from all over the world. I’ve met people through classes, tour groups, hostels, etc. There have been times where I have had meals, and was the only American there. Connecting with people that come from totally different lives is amazing. Plus, you’ll now have a place to stay if your’e travelling to a country that a friend is from.
One of the most valuable things about studying abroad is how much you grow as a person and learn about yourself. I’ve been able to find out who I am, what my likes and dislikes are, and most importantly, what matters most to me in life. I have a clearer vision of my future, and what I want to do with it. The experiences of study abroad really do shape you as a person, which in itself is a reason to study in a different country.
