Boasting the title of the largest cave castle in the world, Slovenia’s Predjama Castle is truly unlike any other European castle that you’ll ever experience. Nestled into a towering 127-meter-high cliffside, Predjama Castle embodies a unique, natural beauty that you won’t soon forget; it’s also an incredibly well-preserved medieval castle that dates back to the 12th century, and possibly even earlier!
My visit to Predjama Castle was definitely the most memorable castle experience I’ve ever had! I’ve visited a lot of castles throughout my travels in Europe, but none of them have the same vibe as Predjama. I honestly didn’t even know cave castles were a thing until I learned about this castle!
There are a few things to know before visiting Predjama that can help elevate your experience, so here is everything I think you need to know about Predjama Castle.

A cave castle is exactly what it sounds like…a castle built directly into a cave! Inside, you’ll find rooms and passageways masterfully carved into the existing stone structure of the cliffside. As you make your way through the castle, you’ll see water droplets fall from the ceiling and land with a satisfying “plop”, catch whiffs of musky air, and feel cool, humid air cling to your skin. It basically feels like you’re inside a cave, but it’s very clearly a castle to your eyes – such a surreal experience!

Stepping past Predjama’s castle walls and into its stone hallways, you’ll find well-preserved rooms decorated with medieval furnishings and historical artifacts. There’s even a medieval courtroom that looks out over a former torture chamber, now set up in a way that makes it easy to imagine what down-on-their-luck prisoners had to go through, complete with fake prisoners and all.

As I mentioned earlier, the air inside the castle is cool and damp, with a slight musky scent that reminds you that you’re, quite literally, inside a cave! I knew going in that Predjama was a cave castle, but I was genuinely surprised at just how cave-like it felt inside, and I felt like it added so much to the experience of exploring the castle. As you make your way further into the castle, you’ll even find a tall staircase that zigzags upward into a cave network that extends well past the castle itself and has its own stories to tell.

Predjama Castle holds major historical significance, most of which is quite dark. The heart of Predjama’s story centers around its most infamous resident, the legendary Knight Erazem of Lueg.
Erazem was a notorious 15th-century knight and the lord of the castle, whose saga kicked off when he killed the commander of the Imperial Army (who was also a powerful relative of the Holy Roman Emperor, Frederick III). This led to a fallout with the Habsburgs, and subsequently, Erazem became a robber baron who used Predjama Castle to launch his raids.

An intense, year-long siege began between Erazem and the imperial army, where the imperial army tried everything to starve him out of the castle. But thanks to the secret winding cave network beneath the castle, Erazem was able to smuggle in fresh supplies and even used them to send his enemies gifts of fresh cherries just to mock their efforts!
Erazem’s story ended in tragedy (and irony). One of the castle servants betrayed Erazem and told the imperial army about the only weak spot in the entire fortress… The bathroom. Fast forward, and the Imperial forces aimed a cannonball at Erazem while he was on the toilet, killing him instantly.

One of the coolest parts of visiting is exploring the massive cave system that lies directly beneath the castle! From May through September, you can take a tour of a portion of the cave beneath Predjama Castle, and you can actually walk through the same hidden passages Knight Erazem used to smuggle in food and supplies while his enemies waited in vain outside.
The entire cave spans about 14 kilometers, though visitors are only allowed to explore a 700-meter section of it. If you’re interested in exploring further into the cave, you can sign up for an “adventure tour” that allows access to deeper, more strenuous sections of the cave system to navigate through.

If you are a paranormal enthusiast or just love exploring spooky places, Predjama Castle should be at the top of your Europe bucket list. Predjama actually holds the title of Europe’s most haunted castle (and one of Europe’s most haunted places in general), so if your spidey senses start tingling as you explore the castle, that could be why!
Many visitors have described eerie encounters, such as the sound of unexplained footsteps on the floorboards, mysterious shadow figures lurking in the corners, and doors that abruptly slam shut without rhyme or reason.

Paranormal investigators suggest that the cave’s mineral composition holds an energy that’s magnetic to ghostly entities. With the number of deaths and murders that occurred within the castle walls over the centuries, there should be no shortage of spirits looming around, if you believe in that sort of thing!
I personally didn’t encounter any ghosts or experience anything spooky during my visit to Predjama Castle, but its haunted lore definitely made the experience all the more interesting.

If Predjama Castle looks familiar to you, it’s probably because it has been featured in several Hollywood productions like Jackie Chan’s 1986 Armour of God (Jackie actually suffered a major injury while performing a stunt at the castle) and Netflix’s The Witcher! If you’re into the paranormal, you may have even seen it featured in an episode of Ghost Hunters International, which investigated the castle in 2008.

Predjama Castle is about an hour’s drive from Ljubljana, making it an easy and very worthwhile day trip from the capital city. The drive is straightforward, and the castle is well-signposted, so you shouldn’t have any trouble finding it. If you’re coming as a day trip from Lake Bled, factor in closer to 1.5 hours of driving time.
While there is a bus that runs from Ljubljana to the nearby town of Postojna, getting to Predjama Castle without a car can be tricky, so I’d strongly recommend hiring a car rental if you plan to visit. Having a car will also give you the flexibility to combine Predjama with Postojna Cave on the same day, which I’d highly recommend (more on that below)!
There are also lots of guided day tours from Ljubljana, which is the best option if you don’t have a rental car, but want to experience the castle without navigating public transportation.

Predjama Castle is open year-round, with hours varying by season:
*Note that the last entry is 30 minutes before closing time, so make sure to plan accordingly!
💡 Pro Tip: If you plan to visit Postojna Cave on the same day (which I recommend!), you can purchase a combo ticket that includes entrance to both Predjama Castle and Postojna Cave for €47.50 per adult, or €57.50 for the full cave experience. It’s a great deal considering how much you get out of both attractions combined!

My visit to Predjama Castle was on a weekday in November, and it was pretty quiet. We only shared the castle with a handful of other visitors, so we were really able to wander through the rooms at our own pace without bumping into tour groups at every turn. If you have any flexibility in your schedule, I’d strongly recommend avoiding weekends, especially in the summer months, when the castle sees the highest number of visitors. For the quietest experience, arriving right at opening time is your best bet for beating the crowds and getting the most peaceful experience possible. You could also arrive an hour or so before closing for a less busy experience.

Just a 15-minute drive from Predjama Castle, Postojna Cave is one of the longest cave systems in the world, and an absolute natural wonder that is absolutely worth combining with your castle visit! As mentioned above, combo tickets are available that bundle entrance to both attractions at a discounted rate, making it an easy decision to tick both off in a single day.

Predjama Castle is a popular day trip from Ljubljana (about an hour away) or from Lake Bled (about 1.5 hours away). With that said, if you’d prefer to make a proper overnight trip out of it, the legendary Hotel Jama is a unique place to stay since it’s located in the heart of Postojna Cave Park! Staying overnight will allow you to explore both Predjama Castle and Postojna Cave at your own pace without rushing.
The hotel underwent a complete renovation in 2020 and now offers a more modern design and top-of-the-line facilities. Most rooms feature a spacious furnished balcony with stunning views of the surrounding park area, and rates starting at surprisingly reasonable prices, so it’s genuinely great value – especially considering hotel guests also get a 10% discount on combo tickets for Postojna Cave and Predjama Castle!

I’ve visited a lot of castles across Europe, but Predjama Castle is by far my personal favorite castle, out of the ones that I’ve been to. It was such a cool experience to wander through the stone-carved hallways and rooms adorned in medieval furnishings while learning about the legends and dark history that unfolded within the very walls that surround you.
Whether you’re a history buff, a lover of all things spooky, or simply someone who gets a thrill out of experiencing something completely unlike anything they’ve ever seen before, I think Predjama Castle is an absolute must-visit for any trip to Slovenia. It’s such a unique experience, and it would be a shame to miss it during your time in Slovenia!
